What I have in my bok is: “The expectation of finding snipe was so strong that the smacking sound of his heel as he drew it out of the rusty mud sounded to Levin like the cry of a bird, and…” and then “Levin barely had time to turn, before he heard the cry or a snipe…”. This version seems to be an exited version in 1992. The use of smacking and cry are effective in providing the imagery for the moment. I like the fact that it was contemporary with Tolstoy so that there was the feeling of reading language in English that would have the same atmosphere as if I was able to read the Russian. However, as a monolinguist I am fascinated to read your comments!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3743216407449778066.post-57065747234727525422014-07-25T23:04:07.492+01:002014-07-25T23:04:07.492+01:00I respect both translators, but if there's one...I respect both translators, but if there's one thing the world doesn't need, it's yet another translation of Anna Karenina when there are so many wonderful novels crying out to be translated. Some of them have waited 200 years or more. Marian Schwartz is probably my favorite translator from Russian, but I sure hope she isn't going to start on War and Peace. Enough is enough.Languagehathttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13285708503881129380noreply@blogger.com
